There is a way in Windows Media Player to advance the video one frame at a time, and back the video up by whole seconds. It's a slight PITA to count frames from when the whole seconds advance by one until you match the car to some reference point, but you can time down to whatever the frame rate is (30 fps is about .033 seconds per frame). It'll certainly be good enough to find the "x" in what's almost certainly a 2:18.x to within 0.1 second.


I've been working with this kludge over the last couple of days, and the 1:37 NJMP/Thunderbolt time (post #106) was really about 1:37.6.

You can always use your phone, too. The phone's own GPS only runs at 1Hz, but it's much more accurate than 1Hz would suggest. The program knows how far away you were, and what your last speed was at your last update before passing the line, and what your location and speed is at the next update, so interpolating the data actually makes it very accurate due to limitations (and predictability) of rate of engine acceleration/deceleration by the finish line.
