Yes, you need an alignment and the bushings need to be timed/clocked.

It does effect the handling, in a positive way. Lowering the car lowers the center of gravity of the car which makes it more responsive. Lowering springs also have improved spring rates which reduced body roll and keeps the car flat in the corners.
