I've also heard that the motorized version of the Recaro sport seat sits lower than the manual version. Can folks confirm this? If true, is it easy to swap out the manual seat for the motorized one? Also, where to buy the motorized Recaro? Thanks!

I do own a '14 SS 1LE with no sunroof. With the stock non-Recaro seats, I had a tiny bit more than 37" of space between the bottom-lowest part of the seat and the roof. When I switched to manual Recaros, presumably same as Z/28 seats without the logo, my headroom has dropped to about 36". Since then, I switched to the powered unit ($2500 MSRP; I think I got it for $2200 or less), and the headroom was back to around 37", though I believe the stock seat still provided a small amount of more headroom.
If your son's SS does not have a sunroof and yet you don't have enough headroom, you might need to consider aftermarket setups. That will also mean you'll have to deal with sensors and airbags, but it probably beats driving your own car cramped.
