Because back in the day, the divisions
did compete, and it promoted a healthy atmosphere even though it was a touch indulgent to have say three divisions all making a 455 cubic inch engine that shared nothing in common with each other. Then when the rules of the car making game changed, GM ignored it for too long, and then we got into the 'Corporate GM' mire that was more or less a sham in some ways. Instead of a graceful transition to a new era, we had an ugly floundering bellyflop.
I know very well that many people- even members of this forum- tried and strived to change that horrid circumstance but unfortunately...we all saw it and the fall out. Without those dedicated resourceful and talented people, we'd never have the good GM products we have today, and it must have been twice as hard to excel in the climate they had to do it in.
