They did it so that there is both a wide overall spread from 1st to last
and close ratios between each gear along the way.
And what are you talking about with the M4 having gears 'too close together to put the power down'? That is precisely
why you go with closely spaced gears in the first place: to keep the engine in the powerband between shifts.
