A rechargable AAA battery lasts forever, but if it runs out I can have a spare one on-hand or grab one from a store...no charging the mp3 player. SD slot lets me change out the music with other little SD cards in my pocket (for even smaller form factor I use microSD cards and a single adapter; a bunch of microSD cards fit in a tiny space). Small form factor fits anywhere, and its light weight dangles from an aux-in cord without falling off.
Edit: Oh, and I almost forgot...you can use it just like a USB flash drive.
