One thing that improves reception in the car is to remove the car's FM antenna, which works great if you don't listen to any FM broadcasts other than your transmitter and strong local signals. I can only guess why it works, but I can say that it definitely works in both my GMC and my VW.

Possibly, but I'm not sure where the problem is: my previous mp3 player's headphone jack was dying, the speakers in the saturn aren't that good, I regularly picked up a little static on every station, and most of the music I listen to is from CD's ripped at the lowest possible quality. So I could have an awful transmitter and not even notice.
And I could remove the antenna, my sansa has its own FM receiver.
