I finally decided to try to use the hook for the first time last night, and it fell off right away. The cord that holds the gas cap is too stiff and doesn't flex enough, so it just pushes itself off. I usually just set it down gently, but this caused it to fall and hit my paint
So I won't be trying that anymore...
