Since the peak power on a stock LT1 is around 5800rpm or so (mine was), this means it's not utilizing all of the performance the motor has to offer. It's not even reaching peak power, let alone going a little past to get the recovery rpm higher in the next gear like it should, and like the other gears do.

This is exactly why when I get to the strip I will try shifting the car manually as well. 1st gear shifts early and the tach ends up back below 4K heading into 2nd gear. 1st gear runs by real quick you have to be on point with your shifting or you will hit the limiter. It sounds like you are clipping the limiter to me when that happens the motor just lays over almost like you hit the pause button. It real gentle when you hit it not like my LS1 where you would get that Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat. I have gotten very accustomed to using the paddles personally. I do a fair amount of rolling runs and shifting manually is the only way I have found to keep it in a gear like 2nd and hold at 25mph until im ready to blast it. I have tried doing this and then pushing the shifter over back into auto mode but the car does not go back into auto mode fast enough and it wont shift in time and hits the limiter. I usually will click the paddle near 56-5700 in 1st and it shifts before it hits the limiter. Really 1st gear is the hardest and the rest of the gears give you more time to react to the tach. Not sure if there is anything to be gained by manually shifting at the track as some guys as of late have posted the ECU tends to close the TB blade at higher RPMs when manually shifting vs leaving it in D. I guess some back to back runs would tell
