We have done stress analysis on both models and they have shown that stress concentrates around the bolt holes. They do not take any suspension loads, only bolt torque load from clamping the strut tower. While the first design is definitely stronger overall, both designs are comfortably under the yield point in the pocket areas!
The dust/dirt concern is a good point! taking these all into consideration!
