By the way, it would seem that the Fostgate's would need to be biamped speakers in order to use them along with the factory amp. Its likely that your problem is more related to that. He needed a different amp to run the full range Fostgate's, and thus the splicing. When the car was sold, it was way too much effort to put the factory speakers back in, so he kept those in there and spliced the factory amp back in. If he hooked the Fostgate's up, they probably sounded awful. I bet they're disconnected on purpose, and probably right at the speaker if your wiring harness looks like its all connected.
