Also, in USPSA some new shooters show up with a Kimber, they always find out quickly how they run and then we see them come back the next week with something solid.

All thoughts and opinions welcome. I do understand that the 'Custom' part of the name indicates nothing further than that. That a true custom build is something else entirely.
Do you recall any general trends in what the new shooters showed up with the next time?
FWIW, at not quite 70 (with a 20+ year old lens implant in my right eye) I'm probably not going to get into competitive shooting. Something between budget and $900, maybe $1k to go down to the range with (and consistently outshoot my son and his guns with

) ought to be about right.
