Definitely not the Challenger, unless you put the Z/28 against some sort of supercharged version. The only muscle car competition really is the GT500.
I think Corvettes (at least Z06's) and Vipers might still be out of the range of a new Z/28.
I agree, I always assumed that the SS would be the big motor version and the Z/28 would be the track ready, race car version. Now my SS is the little brother, which is fine since I wanted to supercharge it whenever it's paid off anyway.
At least this may mean I can go with a GMPP supercharger in the future!
