I think a lot of it has to do with you being perfectly accustomed to what to expect it to sound like vs me coming from a MT background and having gotten in a little practice rev-matching automatic transmission downshifts with my right foot and remembering what that sounded like vs what the usual stomped-right-foot-commanded AT downshift that everybody else makes them do sounds like.
I know the feeling about turns where 2nd gear would be usable (rpm-wise) but only barely so (within a handful of mph of redline). So 3rd gear it is, and the risk of having any lack of smoothness upsetting the car goes away. If I'm close enough to the cornering limit, I won't be able to use 100% throttle even in 3rd.
