It transmits the audio signal sans wires over bluetooth. Instead of plugging your iPhone, etc into the console, you can play stuff without plugging it in.
I agree that it has very minimal use in this application since you'd likely want to plug it in and charge it as well. The one thing it's cool for is I can stream Pandora over bluetooth from my phone. It's just another option, just like plugging it in via aux vs USB. Many would say, what's the difference?
