Why doesn’t he just buy a Range Rover, which is made from local components, just down the road? No, really — weird-beards buy locally produced meat and vegetables for eco-reasons. So why not apply the same logic to cars?

That is the most important part of the article. In otherwords anyone who buys a car built in Japan can't brag about being environmental no matter how economical the fuel mileage. You could drive a hummer and do far less damage to the environment as the vehicle was only shipped across state lines not half way around the world.
