I don't think the VIN (and certainly not the 5th position, according to the referenced post) has anything to do with RS or Non-RS. For example, the 5th position of my VIN is a "J" and sure enough, I have a 1SS automatic (L99).

Yup, that is correct. GM has a page with PDFs for each year that show how to decode the VIN number of different GM vehicles. Each PDF contains the same information as the post you linked. Here is a link to the PDFs https://service.gm.com/dealerworld/vincards/
