Go with a stronger foundation to hold second story live load areas, and design the roof that way. Even if you don't do it now, you may do it later. This way, your structure is built to take all the remodeling in the future.

My brother was the builder, but I sat down with an engineer to build it for the future. Leaned my leason after doing my first shop.
