Don't do it. The mesh helps straighten out the flow across the MAF. As far as I know it was the sahpe of the opening and not the mesh that was the difference between the tune and no tune, but I could be wrong. With such a short distance for the air to travel it seems the mesh is a great idea.
Better yet, call Vararam and ask them. Steve and the guys at VR are really helpful and know their product best.
