Basically it is, but helmholtz work by cancelling out that specific frequency that cause the drone. Most silencers work by reducing the overall volume or the overall tone producing somewhat of a muffled out sound. J-Pipes, or the helmholtz pipes will only draw in the drone and let the "good" resonance pass through the muffler itself creating a drone free well defined tone.
