It really depends on your needs and use... If you only need to use the tools 2-3 times per year for checking brake rotors, even harbor freight stuff seems to work well. If you require real precision for measuring critical components and clearances, I liked my experiences with Starret or Mitutoyo.

That being said I have been using a chinese digital caliper that finally died after 5 years in a damp basement, it did a great job for my needs until recently and I got my moneys worth from it. I only measure brake rotors at home... Not really a high precision job.
