What about the axles? Obviously a jack would be needed to support/lower the differential once the three bolts were removed.

I never just replaced the Gasket. The Differential was out of my car when I replaced the Gasket, so I had the Exhaust, Driveshaft and Axles Removed at the time. The Exhaust isn't too hard to remove. Disconnect it by loosening the sleeves near the Transmission and sliding them back then work the hangers at the differential and rear off gradually.
