I think what he's saying is that the 5th gen Z/28 is essentially the first car in the model's history to be truly regarded as a world class performance car that can hold its own against super-cars. It sort of paved the way for cars like the current ZL1/1LE, and demonstrated that this level of performance was possible in it's class/price point.
