The point of the article is that you can't buy directly from the manufacturer. I would LOVE it if I could cut out the dealer and buy my car like I was shopping for a computer on HP.com or something... just pick the features, etc, that I wanted, and go pick it up at a service station somewhere. The dealers could still stay open, there would still be people buying off the lot, and for service b/c that's where they make most of their money anyway. But I could get what I wanted for the right price without having to deal with a dealer's idea of "fair," because it's not what I want.
