Paddle shifters are, for some, a better interface to the automatic. What would be even better would be if the automatic was a SMG or DSG like on german cars -- a servo-operated manual that can be controlled by the computer OR the driver, no torque converter, a real clutch (operated by servos instead of a pedal), and extremely fast shifts.

Even if a DSG is available, I'll be buying the cheapest base model with the manual transmission. My commute is 60% country roads/40% highway, never a traffic jam...
