He said he lost a lot of power and went in to limp mode and it had the StabiliTrak light on when I showed up but I figured that was from it running out of gas?
What is the best way to check the starter? It has 90,000miles on it and the timing chain replacement has been performed.

My Father would have made me walk home to teach me to never run the car out of gas again. Growing up we had "The Half Tank" rule in our house. As soon as you gas gauge hit half tank you filled it up. If Dad got in your car and the tank was below half, you lost your driving privledges for a week.
