Understand the ding. Happened on my passenger door at 4 weeks.
1 1/2" vertical embedded white paint mark. Took awhile to get it off. Thanks to the 5" Clear Bra I had put across the door from the curve down there was no damage!
I'd park like you did if given the chance.
