^I'm not too sure about a 5th gen outperforming an ls1 4th gen in most categories unless you are talking about a ZL1 or 1LE or Z28. The ls1 4th gen was almost a surprise to the automotive world, as it was a relatively inexpensive car with great (but underrated) power. We all know about GM's penchant for plastics especially for interiors; Once we get past that then you can judge a 4th gen more clearly in performance. Even in stock form the 4th gen totally devastated mustangs and quite a few other pricier players in its genre at the time.

The 5th gen has better materials and fit and finish, but at the cost of increased curb weight, which hampered its performance gain. Again I say, do not take the 4th gen, especially ls1 4th gens lightly. As the owner of one I'll be the first to tell you that it will more than hold its own against the competition.
