Was thinking along the same lines. The ring might have distorted because of driving on it which further caused the ring to get "smashed" even more and now it's got the wheel locked to the hub.
You trouble has made me think twice about buying a wheel that needs hubcentric rings to fit properly. Good luck on getting it resolved. Hopefully it doesn't mess the wheel up.
