Likely just renewing their trademark so that nobody else can swoop in and steal the name. I don't know why anyone else would want to use it seeing as GM decided to rename the Cavalier to Cobalt more than a decade ago because that name was so damaged. Then they did the same thing to Cobalt with Cruze, which is now accepted as being a decent car.

I think they renewed their trademark on Chevelle sometime in the last few years, and it threw everyone into a tizzy because people thought GM was going to be bringing it back. But there hasn't been the slightest indication from GM that they're considering a new Chevelle. No concept cars, no talk of a car like the Chevelle existing, no prototypes seen running around ... nothing.
