American Patent
•Edward J. Claghorn was the first to patent a seat belt. Claghorn, who was from New York City, received patent number #312,085 in 1885 for his creation. Claghorn said his invention was "designed to be applied to the person, and provided with hooks and other attachments for securing the person to a fixed object."
Quick-Release Belts
•The first quick-releasing safety belt installed as standard equipment appeared in Fords for the model year 1956. These safety belts were called the AutoCrat Safety Belt and were patented by brothers Kenneth and Bob Ligon.
Modern Belts
•Nils Bohlin of Sweden is credited with creating the first modern three-point safety belt. Bohlin's belt, which combined both lap and shoulder straps, was first used in Volvos in the late 1950s.
