I personally prefer the sound of an x-pipe but purposely avoided the resonated x-pipe for the very reason the OP mentioned. I've changed my exhaust setup many times and finally settled on something I really like. I currently have Kooks 2" headers with faux cats (I fabed some straight through resonators that bolt in place of the cats), BBK 2.75" X-pipe which actually replaces the exhaust from behind the cats to in front of the mufflers. My previous setup was Kooks 1 7/8" headers with cats and the Magnaflow regular x-pipe and stock 2.5" exhaust. The new set up has a slightly deeper tone and less rasp and is no louder (actually slightly quieter) which I measured using a decibel meter app.
