I'm perplexed as well. Like you, the only thing I can imagine is they stripped one of the driveline to differential bolts. At the differential, my car has 3 bolts with 18mm hex heads connecting to the driveline. These are regular bolts with nothing out of the ordinary about them. Apparently they are unobtanium because they can't get replacements until tomorrow morning.

All I can say is that I hope the dipstick that muffed the differential install isn't the same person who set up the gears. I'm pissed because now I'm going to have a hard time being confident in their work. Every time I hear a strange noise I'm going to be wondering if my diff is about to come apart...

It would not surprise me at all that they have a more junior guy pull the diff out of the car, and then their more seasoned tech actually setup the gears. I wouldn't borrow trouble just yet.
