So you got a non-stock arm?

A radius rod is another name for a trailing arm so the bushing will, indeed, come into action when braking, in an attempt to keep the wheel in its static position.

Regarding steering, if you're looking for a firmer/more direct feel check out JPSS's aluminum bushing inserts; or if you have a track-duty car I believe Pegasus makes full aluminum bushings for the radius rod.
