LS3 M6 Clutch chatter
Is there a tsb on this? My car just got it today with 2100 miles on it. It smells so bad I want to puke when I get out. How long does it take to fix? The people that have had it fixed, did it fix the problem? What do they replace?

This happens from to much slippage during a launch causing hot spots & divots on the flywheel & pressure plate. When it gets damaged like this you can have the flywheel resurfaced and replace the clutch disc & pressure plate.

Wouldn't think so. He would have had to really slip the clutch to get it that hot...hot enough that smoke would be rolling out and the smell is unmistakable..but it is possible to destroy an OEM clutch in short order. If your ever at the dragstrip and see someone rying to do a burnout & smokke is pouring out but the tires aren't spinning....that is a desroyed clutch. It may still engage and drive, but the damage has been done and it is on its way to failing.

I would get it into the dealer than. Sounds like a pressure plate defect then.

There are 2 types of pressure plates, one with traditional looking springs, and one with a diaphram. If the diaphram style cracks, it will act like your describing & will not have the clamping force it is designed for as well as not totally disengaging. Not your fault IMHO, just a defect. But you won't know until it is taken out & inspected.

Let dealer check it out. There was a tsb out a while ago for pressure plate bolts backing out.

And that would explain the symptoms also.

That would fit the loose bolts scenario even better. Loose bolts will allow the entire assy to move around when diengaged and really shake when taking off, but still act pretty normal when movong at speed where the spline is keeping things pretty centered.
3min3m2 has it correct I predict. Keep us posted as to what it turnes out to be. |
