Lightbulb My GM Protection Plan Came In The Mail Today...

I bought my Camaro on Friday 04/29/2011, and today 09/07/2011 a GM Protection Plan comes in the mail.

If I sign up for it I will extend my Warranty to 5 Years/100,000 Miles with a $100.00 deductible.

Here are the conditions:

My car has to have less than 12,000 miles (which it does), and this is the price I qualify for:

Cash Price of Service Contract: $1,775.00
Sales Tax: $124.25
Total Cash Price: $1,899.25
Total Sale Price: $1,899.25
Finance Charge: $0.00
Annual Percentage: 0.0%

Payment Terms: $301.75 down, and $88.75/month for 18 Months.

It also states that a Full Refund will be offered if I cancel within the first 60 days (as long as no claims have been filed).

The offer expires October 30th, 2011, or when my vehicle exceeds the mileage noted above (12,000) whichever comes first.

You can find more information about it here: http://www.gmppdirect.com

Any thoughts, suggestions, ideas from anyone? Anyone do something similar in the past where it proved to be worth it...or not?

I've been thinking about how it's good for 5 Years or 100,000 Miles (whichever comes first) and I have to seriously consider how many miles I put on a car. The car I traded in for the Camaro was 6 years old (when I traded it in) and it had 11,800 Miles on it...that's it!

I appreciate any feedback...thanks.

Is that 5 Years/100,000 Miles a powertrain or bumper to bumper warranty?

I had this on my car when I purchased it back in July and mine was going to run $1600. However, when I realized that I was going to eventually want to do mods to it and knowing the vehicles I had in the past were always taken care of I decided it wasn't worth it. I took a signed letter over to my Chevy dealership and 2 wks later nothing had been heard back from Corporate. So, the financer said he would call on it but I haven't heard anything since. If you don't plan on modding the car at all maybe it is a good idea, but if you do then why waste the money. Not only that, but take into consideration of whether you will keep your car for that long or want to trade it in for a better model down the road. It's your choice really, but I took mine off. At least I think I did.

We paid $725 for this same plan for the wife's Cruze in March. They can do much better.

They said this in the additional information provided:

"GMPP coverage goes beyond your Manufacturer's Bumper-to-Bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty and the GM 100,000 mile/5-year Powertrain Limited Warranty"

This leads me to potentially believe that it's extending past both Powertrain and Bumper-to-Bumper .

I just bought a GMPP Major Guard from them, $0 deductible, 48 mo/32K for $840. My car is now covered until Sept 2015 or 42K miles. I only put about 5K per year on it. I think the price you got seemed a little high...

If you decide to go with the GMPP Major Guard, you can do much better on price by going somewhere other than GMPPDirect.com.

I purchased mine here - http://www.gmoutlet.com/home.htm

They beat the discounted prices of everyone else I contacted by a couple of hundred dollars. Had to jump through a couple of hoops to get the coverage (email link for pricing, dated photo of mileage on car) but the savings was worth it for the few extra minutes of work. For GMPP coverage, it doesn't matter where you buy it, as long as it is legit, it will show up in GM's warranty coverage system that all dealers look at.

Is it worth it? Depends. Maybe you'll get lucky and nothing will break outside of your factory warranty. I wasn't so lucky. At 40k miles, a 'service airbag' light popped on the dash. Fix was to replace the supplemental restraint module and reprogram the system - cost $380. I need 2-3 more minor issues like that and my warranty cost was justified. Next on the list is getting the USB module replaced ($180 part MSRP plus labor)...

Don't jump on it too fast...there are better deals. Also, I just got my third one in from GMPP...they will keep sending them. Price is still the same as the first one that came in. I bought my Camaro in Feb this year, and it just turned 3K. If I decide to go with it, I'll wait until I get about 11K on it and then make the decision, and that way I'll get more mileage coverage and time coverage and not have to come off the money too early if I go with their plan.

For GMPP, there are two different price structures - new car, used car. The cheaper "New car" pricing applies to vehicles with less than 12k miles/12 months of service, whichever occurs first. You can gain almost an entire year/extra 12k of extra coverage simply by waiting until you are near that new/used car limit. I picked up my GMPP plan at 11,500 miles - same price as it would have been at 10 miles but instead I'm now covered out to 111,500 miles instead of 100,010 miles. I drive too much to be worried about the months of coverage part...

I'd be a little hesitant to buy a non-GM plan, unless...

I'd dealt with the company before. I had one a few years back and the dealer had to call for authorization which the two or three times I used it, took 2 to 3 days. Not a good thing. Plus the dealer hated it because it took forever for him to get paid. There are some crap companies out there.

The best site for information on the GMPP is at www.gmprotectionplan.com. It gives you all of the dates and mileages you can get. The different coverages and it would help to explain your current plan. I would give that a look through and if any of you guys have questions let me know!

Thank you all for your input (the very reason I posted the information here). I liked the link to GMProtectionPlan.com as well. I am going to take my time as DAVET1LT suggested.

Also, I could have sworn that the very day I bought my car from the dealer I spoke with GEICO (my car ins company) on the phone, and they informed me that they have something they can offer me as well (in the warranty category). I think they even said I had about 15 Months to take their plan. I intend on contacting them again as I can't remember what it was.

It absolutely is not bumper to bumper. Not even close. Read the list of exclusions.

That thing I was talking about with GEICO is called: "M.B.I. = Mechanical Breakdown Insurance".

More information on it can be found here:
