Effect of weight on performance?

I was wondering if anybody had any real objective data on the performance of the ZL1 relative to weight.
I realize there are MANY variables including weather, mods, fuel, etc.
But...has anybody actually seen any real data on increases in 1/4 mile times by removing 50/100/200? pounds.

I'm the heaviest thing that could be removed from my car

You can find lots of 1/4 mile calculators to get a rough idea, but I'm not sure how accurate most of them are. Weight makes a huge difference for road racing and drag racing as well, hopefully someone can post up some time slips before and after a weight loss, but that might be hard to find without the times being skewed by additional power mods.

Did a weight loss back to back comparison a few weeks ago. A 55 lb reduction was good for about a .15 improvement. Swapped two lead acid batteries for one lithium battery in a high 8 sec 1st gen car. Less weight in the back hurt the 60 ft .01/.02ish, possibly had slight tire slip. With a little more chassis tuning might be able to slightly improve on the weight loss et improvement.

Traction, and weather often seem to really impact the ET the most. Below 50 F, with traction, and the ET really drops a couple tenths.

All else being equal, I'd guess 100 lbs being good for about 2 tenths. Lots of variables though.

general old school weight difference seems to be .1 sec for every 100 pounds. Anyone ever read the old Hot Rod article "Caddy Hack"?

Hah! I remember that. And, I agree, the old rule of thumb is 1/10th = 100lbs. or 10HP.

I frequently let a passenger ride with me on the 1/4 mile and they are always good for 2/10 second extra on the clock.

I agree with this. Also, I believe a 1/10 of a second is about a car length at the speeds we are running in a 1/4 mile.

Lots of guys race with a passenger in their car. Most don't realize that the passenger is worth about .2 or so in the 1/4 mile (-20hp).

Especially guys street racing. One person will ride along to film the race. The car with the passenger filming is at about a 2 car length disadvantage in a full length race.

Also, the lighter your car the more a reduction or increase in weight will affects it (higher % of its overall weight) A lighter car (WRX for example), will be more affected by an increase of 100 lbs than a 4200 lb car.

I rode with my uncle a couple times in his car. It was an automatic mercedes so very very consistent 12.9's with just driver and very consistant 13.1 with passenger. That 100# = 1/10 is fairly accurate. Where the weight comes off is also very important. Static weight, sprung and unsprung, and rotational weight will offer different gains.

Yeah, I've been into cars my whole life. I was 19 and driving an '80 Trans Am with a '73 455 in it when that article was published. Good times!
