squeeling noise on decel
Hey guys. Really weird issue here. Ive got a 2010 2ss m6 that runs perfectly. I've got a vararam intake tsp headers and a tune.
The issue is that on decel, particularly when cold, there is an odd squeeling noise coming from what sounds like the middle of the car. It's very hard to place. Its been there since before I did any of the mods so they haven't caused it. Its very annoying. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. |

I presume you mean decel by downshift only... as in, not a brake squeal, correct?
My first guess would be a clutch issue... some slippage that occurs when "reverse torque" is being applied to the clutch plate. |

Also, if you Google "Squeal upon deceleration," you will see eleventy jillion entries discussing this, most saying that they get the squeal only when cold... after 10 minutes or so of driving, the problem fades away, similar to your description.
Some indicate that lubing the u- joints has solved the problem. That's an easy job, the first thing I would do (long before starting to monkey with the clutch!). Also, test your belt (belts? I don't know how many are found under an SS's hood). If you can hear any of the squeal while it's idling in the driveway, use a spray bottle, or even a little shot of WD- 40... shoot it on the belt, see if the sound temporarily goes away (it will come back... this is only to help identify the location of the sound). If this has no effect, look elsewhere. If it DOES change the sound, it could be the belt, the water pump, tensioner, pulleys, or anything that the belt works. |

Is your heater vent motor on? Try turning it off, test drive, and listen again -I'm serious.

The belts are original but the noise isn't coming from the engine bay. More like the transmission. It also makes the noise regardless of when the ac/heat is on.
As far as clutch slippage.. Ive noticed that it makes the noise at a complete stop as well. Just less pronounced. Its loudest on decel though. |

Sory, I'm baffled. You might be able to figure it, though, by documenting all of the factors that seem to create the sound or not. Of course you mentioned deceleration, but also at a stop... hmm. Only when cold? Will it do it if you turn the engine off coasting down in neutral (only do this if you are very confident in what you are doing!)? Will it make the noise with the wheels off the ground (like on mechanic's lift)? Will it make the noise in every gear, neutral, even reverse? Can you alter the noise with engine revs, braking, or on different road surfaces?
Of course, ONE way to make the noise go away is to take it to a mechanic, explain the noise, and have him test drive it... for damn sure the noise will not make a peep then! |

Lol you're probably right. I will be taking it into the dealership next week as its still under warranty.
One thing I should mention. It does do it when its warm just not as loud. You can really only hear it if your going through a tunnel or going through a lot of close trees, in second or first. Any higher revs and the engine noise drowns it out. |

I won't have my camaro til around the end of the month so my suggestions are based on common squeals on other cars. At stand still you sure your not slightly rolling and you just need some new break pads? Also at slow roll you could hear a possible bad wheel bearing. Remember cars can throw sound and one of the most common squeals is usually an old power steering belt it while squeal at standstill a lot of times as well, along with in the cold or rainy weather. I'd suggest popping the hood taking a look at the belts first if you see cracks or they look bad toss new ones on and probl should be solved. Those are my only thoughts transmission wouldn't be doing anything with the clutch pressed and not moving?

Just read your last post, from experience in all my other cars the tunnel, passing guard rails and such making a noise it's usually a bad wheel bearing.
