ZL1 Driveline lash cure?

Here is the weird thing. A local transmission shop run by a guy who does a lot of drag racing installed the ZL1 kit on my 1LE. When I got the car back I very surprised to find zero drive-line lash. No clanking.

Then when I had to replace my DOA Centerforce DYAD with a Street Slayer, the drive-line lash and the annoying clanking is back. One other thing I did when the clutch was installed was to replace my diff bushings with the H-E offset bushings that raises the ZL1 diff an inch. Could this be the cause?

So a second question, if I go aftermarket driveshaft would it cure the clanking? I suppose there could be slight performance advantage with a lighter driveshaft.

What pieces were changed to ZL1 by the shop? Typically the clanking I suspect your hearing is associated with clutch discs that have dampening springs.

If you're hearing the clanking when you push the clutch in its the driveshaft. The only remedy would be a one piece

What did you think about your Centerforce DYAD?

The 1-piece really helped with mine.

Once I switched to a clutch without the damper springs I don't have the clanking. Still have the OEM driveshaft. The OEM drive shaft does have rubber isolators but they don't afford it enough movement to make noise.

Interesting. So I had the DYAD when I torched my 1LE posi. Then once I replaced the weak diff with the graveyard digger no lash at all. But the lash came back when the DYAD was replaced with the Street Slayer and offset diff bushings. So the clutch could be partially responsible.

On ramps I can twist the drive shaft in neutral and hear the clank right at the diff.

It also could possibly explain the rattle I hear from the back going on to the driveway ramp.

I don't think either the DYAD or Street Slayer have the dampening springs.

Not much. It was an expensive mistake.

After exhaustive reading I picked the Street Slayer Carbon. So far rock solid. But I do find it very hard to get a good 60' with this clutch. I was able to do better with the DYAD. And maybe it was better at dampening driveline lash.

I don't think the Street Slayer has the springs.

No it does not make the noise when I push the clutch in, It happens when I am letting out. I hear it mostly when I am not making a conscious effort to drive smoothly or rev match.

I looked into both and DYAD has the springs, the slayer does not. My guess is its a combination of lash throughout the drivetrain, trans and diff. The new diff probably has better lash tolerances and the DYAD was absorbing the torque loads minimizing the noise. With the slayer it has no way to absorb the torque loads so the noise ihas become noticeable again.

Mine does the same, not like my original thought of the cranky clutch but I can hear a little lash in the trans. I haven't paid enough attention to notice if it's in the diff as well.

Thanks. So a one piece driveshaft might not help.

Hard to say. Driveshaft is a good upgrade anyways so you may just want to try it.
