700 workers layoff Feb. 9 in Oshawa, Ontario

I saw this on CNN this morning. This kinda concerns me that they would be laying off employees at a factory that is about to start building a new car. Maybe it is nothing to worry about, but seems odd to me.

Another 700 workers will go on indefinite layoff Feb. 9 in Oshawa, Ontario, where GM (GM, Fortune 500) makes the Chevrolet Impala large sedan. The company is cutting the third shift, [/B]also due to slowing demand, Lee said

Hey Max, nothing to worry about yet, GM Oshawa builds a number of vehicles. These lay offs pertain to the Impala line. Think if you check some of the other threads, a line worker from the plant explains what is going on as he was one of those laid off.:(

That's right before the Camaro starts production. I'm sure they'll take at least some of the Impala employees and put them on the Camaro line.

There are 3 car assembly plants in Oshawa. The layoffs did not affect the Camaro line.

I wonder how much Impala's sales have fallen off?? I ask because right now I'm guessing there are no more than 9,000 pre-sold Camaro orders awaiting production.

If GM had to shut down the Impala line, sales must be almost down to ZERO. So 9,000 Camaro orders is enough to keep it's line open.

Is the Impala that bad of a car???

The impala is not a bad car, but I think it's run has is slowly coming to an end like any other sedan in it's class. I think most of the Impalas were fleet orders anyway, I could be wrong.

They have a few thousand in inventory. Dec-Feb are slow months in new car sales so I think it is just a money saving move.

That sucks for any worker. Hopefully they can get back up on their feet very soon. No news is good news (for Camaro line anyways).

Angry Pulling the Plug!

There is a strong rumor from GM suppliers that GM is going to cancel the Camaro now before production. They feel it would be cheaper now rather than once it goes into production. Because of the current economic state in both countries pre order sales are disappointing.

Don't spread rumors unless you can quote the exact high level source within GM that made the statement.

Impala sales were also affected by the success of the new Malibu.

Gee, a first post saying the sky is falling again. Imagine that. I refuse to comment on the grounds I might call said "first-poster" an insulting name.
