Tuning with emissions
Looking for some guidance from some more experienced/senior Camaro owners/tuners in here.
I'm planning on ordering up some Kooks 1-7/8" LTs with catted connection pipes but want to get a couple things straight with respect to tuning and passing emissions in Virginia. Obviously the easiest way to pass emissions is to not install long tubes, but where's the fun in that? I've done some research about my states requirements when it comes to passing emissions. Obviously, with the new way to do an emissions inspection is hooking up a device to check DTCs as well as, for some, a visual inspection. One of the requirements is that no DTCs are being reported in the cars computer and the other is that all readiness monitors are reporting 'ready'. Fortunately, in VA, you can have up to one of these monitors reporting 'not ready' before an automatic failure is reported. Now, my question lies in the tuning aspect of this. Conceptually, if a tuner 'tunes out' or 'disables' the rear O2 sensors from reporting codes, since they're the most likely culprit, then the computer shouldn't receive a 'not ready' from these monitors. For those with prior experience with this or who is more knowledgeable about the subject, could you correct any errors in my thinking or steer me in the right direction to understanding the proper way to go getting a tune that will allow me to put the LTs while passing emissions? Thanks in advance. |

not sure about the laws in VA...but here as long as there's no CEL, you're fine. They do plug the car into a computer to check for codes and it has not been an issue for me (LT's, hi-flo cats/tune). They are supposed to do a visual check to at least make sure there's cats, but no one ever does (don't tell the tree huggers).
I don't think w/ a tune the O2's get disabled necessarily...but sort of cloaked so the computer thinks everything is working perfectly.

This can definitely be handled through tuning. I know VA and NOVA laws, so take that with confidence. I don't know if it's automatic knowledge for every tuner, but with any good tuner it will be.
