Warranty Question...

Ok, i searched around and couldnt find what i was looking for.. Im looking to do after market upgrades as opposed to the gmpp's. My question is what exactly does it take to void the warranty? Are you pretty much screwed if you do anything, or is there some stuff you can get by with? Thanks

Legally, they have to prove any aftermarket modification contributed to the fault of anything you are claiming is covered under warranty. That being said, dealers will sometimes try to convince you voided your warranty with any modifications. Things like intake and exhaust should be ok. If you're going forced induction, you pretty much forfeit any powertrain warranty.

This can be a gray area and many dealers will try to screw you. About the only thing you can get away with easily is an intake and cat-back, headers only if they're shorties. They have to claim that what you did negatively affected that area of the warranty to deny it. Any internal engine work or something that increases power too much will void your powertrain warranty. Most suspension work will void that area too.

My sister was denied warranty work by a Toyota dealer for her Scion. They said her window switch not working was a result of getting the windows tinted! A complaint through Toyota headquarters took care of that.

Get to know your service department. Find one with friendly, decent people, and build a good friendly relationship with them. That way they are more likely to be fair about warranty work rather than automatically dismissing you.

Always ask your dealer before you add anything. I mean anything. A dealer tried to tell me that adding a K&N to my 08 HHR SS would void the warranty.
