Loose feeling
I'm about to install springs next week but was wondering what I'm feeling with the stock suspension? As I'm driving it feels like the car wants to shimmy side to side a bit... I can't tell if it's just the road or what but feels odd.

You may want to do cradle bushings. That may solve it.

Set of pedders cradle bushings will deffinitly help out this issue, it will tighten up the rear alot and provide a more solid feel

could be your alignment too, if your toe is way out it can make the car want to pull in various directions, either way, Sub Frame bushings are a good thing, and you will need an alignment after you do the springs.

Just curious, have you ever had a car with wide tires before? Wide front tires tend to make the car wander more than skinny's.

Yes. I have owned two different cobras both with very wide tires, a lightning, and another Camaro. I'm going to end up dumping money in my suspension in the next stages because it's the one thing I'm very sensitive to and it will drive me nuts if not right.

What you are experiencing is rear end step out / rear end steer. The 5th Gen IRS attaches to the monocoque through four large rubber bushes (sub-frame bushes). The IRS twists with those four bushes allowing the rear wheels to steer the car. You can read more about this and how to correct it in THE Book of 5th Gen Suspension.
When you lower your Camaro, rear end step out becomes more pronounced. The same is true with coilsovers, sway bars, stickier, wider and taller tires. Anything that improves grip will exaggerate rear end step out. All of the suspension companies offer some type of sub-frame upgrade. This is the technical suspension and I am reluctant to turn your question into buy my parts classified ad. Please take the time to read through THE Book. I'll be happy to respond directly to any questions you may have in your thread. |

You didn't mention if this feeling happens when you are pushing the car hard in the corners or just during a typical drive to the store. If it is something you feel all of the time it sounds like an alignment issue. As Raymond mentioned above, excessive toe will steer the car, follow lines in the road, etc, forcing you to continually correct the wheel all of the time. If you are feeling this during aggressive driving only, it is more than likely your rear cradle bushings as Pete mentioned in the post above. There are various solutions to this problem in the form of bushing upgrades - Polyurethane, Delrin, and Aluminum.

Did you buy your car new or used? That could make a difference and it very well could be the road. Take some time to drive on difference roads to see if it is the roads. Then you can listen to the experts on their opinion. Just my .02.

My 2011 L99 did very much the same thing what Pete said is the issue as well as the radius bush up front it's like your wheels keep changing alignment as the too soft bushings allow them to move out of place as you drive. Full cradle bush and radius rod bush upgrade solved the problem along with toe link arm and trailing upgrade. My new 2012 LS3 however is more stable out the box, only upgrades are coilovers and rear 32mm swaybar solid even right now with just that the car is on par with the 2011 L99 with more suspension mods GM really improved on a lot of things.
