Mufflers Turning Black

So I started my Camaro up for the first time in a while, and I noticed that there was some black residue on the garage floor after I moved it out of the garage. Upon further inspection, I see that the bottom of my mufflers have big black spots on the bottom. Almost like oil residue. Is this normal. Is it a function of the car running rich? It has not been run in a while due to sitting around for winter. Felt good and weird to be back in the car again. The Cobalt just doesn't compare.

I noticed the same thing, had to scrub with scotch brite to remove it from the bottom of the mufflers, it is coming from the drain hole , I think this is just normal exhaust vapors that are expelled from the engine that is causing this.

Thanks for the quick response. I guess when it gets warm enough outside to finally wash the car I will have to work on cleaning the mufflers too.

I believe it is carbon and it comes from the small holes in the mufflers that allow water to run out of them. I painted mine with high temp flat black paint and they disappear under the car.

It could be from the oil going into the cylinders if you dont have a catch can.

Nope don't have a catch can. Is the oil going into the cylinders common? Maybe a catch can is a possible purchase to avoid this black mess.

The factory tune is REALLY REALLY RICH. If you do any mods like CAI, Headers, etc, it will get worse until you have the car tuned.

I would have thought adding more air flow would lean it down , not make it worse.

I would think GM designed the car to run rich, tuning this out might make it run better but break down faster....

It is not oil. This is nothing to worry about. It is soot and water(condensation) mixture seeping from the weep hole at the bottom of each muffler can. Be happy the weep holes are actually not clogged up and are draining otherwise, the innards of the mufflers would rust and eventually rattle.
