Nitto NT05 vs NT05R

I posted this in the Wheel/Tire section but thought this would be a good place as well.

I'm looking into putting some OEM 20x9 on all four corners and then I'm going to use the 20x8 fronts to mounts some drag radials on. I'm pushing it to put 275 on the 20x8 and Nitto only makes NT05 in that size.....not NT05R.

Is the NT05 still a decent drag radial tire? Wouldn't it be better than some NT555R tires?

I'll only be using them for the drag strip. Maybe a 20 min drive from my house to the drag strip but that would be about the only street use.

The NT05 is not a drag radial. The NT555R would be a better tire for the track. The best drag radial Nitto makes is the NT05R though.

For the track I would use the stock 20x8 in the front and the 20x9 for the rear with a drag radial. You want the smallest and lightest wheel in the front you can have not the biggest. Also, the wider 9" wheel can accommodate a 305 for the track.

Thanks. I'll would probably go NT555R then.

Yes...optimally the 8 in the front and 9 on back but I'm looking to get out the least expensive way I can. I'm only going to the track probably 4-5 times a year for some fun. So putting 20x9 all around and then using the 20x8 for the radials because I already have the wheel.

Now...one thought would be to possibly sell the 20x8 and get another set of 20x9. Just not sure that the 20x8 would sell and if so I probably wouldn't get much out of them.

you have it backwards, the 555 is not a very good track tire, on the other hand the nt05 is a really good track tire, when heated up... http://www.superchevy.com/technical/...est/index.html...you are better off buying a set of 18,s with nto5 or mt,s for the track, if you don,t run that often you will get years out of them...you will spend a fortune on 20inch drs, and not get very good life out of them just to use seldom at track and will not hook above 400rwhp..imo..long run, it will be less costley for 300.00 vette rims with 600 dr,s ..900 .00 investment will last years and you will have great traction when you really want it...and keep a good all weather handling tire..for everyday driving..good luck

This is what I'm thinking about doing now. I talked to a guy from my 1st Gen Club that is at a Discount Tire. He quoted me the C6 Z06 replicas with 305 NT05R for $875 out the door. Thats wheel, tire, mount, balance, and tax.

If figure wost case is that I use them for a season or two and could easily dump them for say $600-$700 if I had to. Shouldn't have too many miles on them. After all it would only be a 1/4 at a time...

BTW: The NT05 I was referring to in my OP was just the NT05....not the NT05R.

That's what he quoted me. I thought it sounded cheap as well. I guess we'll see when push comes to shove if it's true. Sounds like at the moment it's going to hard finding the Nittos in stock.

Daily driver/track tire - NT555R.
Track tire - NT05R

NT05 = street tire

I like my NT555Rs. I've used them on several of my cars. I just heat them up good and they hook. I'm not making big HP though. But for a street/strip tire, they're pretty good. They work quite well on the street as long as they still have tread. I get about 8k miles out of mine, which included several trips to the track.

that is good price , but watch the offsets on repros, they usually come 56mm, will not work..only the factory stock c6 zo6 and grand sport front wheels are 40mm offset..

Or use the extra set of 20x9 with DR's for the track and keep your existing 20-8 front and 20x9 rear.

Do you already have an extra set of 20x9 rears?

I think you are confused. The NT05 is not a drag radial bur a street tire.

The NT555 = Street Tire
The NT05 = Street Tire
The NT555R = Drag Radial
The NT05R = Drag Radial

I would rate their traction in the following order: 555 < 05 < 555R < 05R

That is how I understood it. That is why I suggested the 555R Drag Radial over the NT05 Street Tire.

That's because I bought them all. At least all the ones my dealer had in stock when I called.

Bingo.

The 555R is a great strip/street tire that can last up to 10-15K miles depending on your driving habits.

The 05R is a better track tire but does not last very long. I got less than 1K miles on them. But, I could hook on the street with a 200 shot making 800tq and 650rwhp.

A year and a half ago I got a set of the 18" z06 wheels, w/ 40 mm offset and 18" M & H racemaster drag radials for about $1200. Then I had to have them mounted and balanced. That didn't cost me anything but if if did I would have to add another $50 or so. Thats 4 bills more than your price. I hope you can get the setup for so cheap. That would be awesome!!

Yeh, that is a very good deal. Jump on it.

The NT05R in a 315/35/20 alone are $315-$355 each. Maybe the fact that they were for the Z06 wheels which are 18's make the tires cheaper.

I'm sure the 18's are cheaper. There is more of a selection for the 18. He said the tires were just under $500 and the wheels where $125+25 or so shipping. Mounted up and out the door for $875 total.

Waiting on my tax return to get here and then I'll find out if I can truely get them that cheap. I don't think the guy is BS'in me. I've talked with him a couple times over the last couple of days and each time I went in-depth about what I'm looking to do.

If I go down this route, which I think I am, then I'll post up if it's true or not. It's been low to mid-70s around here this week and I think the track opens up in March. I want to get out, get a little practice, and turn some numbers before it turns into an inferno in a few months......and keep my fingers crossed I don't break stuff with some sticky tires.
