The Forum ROCKS! Spare Key Programming

I decided to buy a spare key. (Hey, shit happens).

The dealership quoted me a price of $30.00 for the FOB and $10.00 to cut the key. Fine.

I picked it up today and they said you have to go to Service to have it programmed. The service guy says, "Oh! It's a VERY complex procedure. You're going to have to leave your car hear. We'll need at least an hour. Since you're a repeat customer, we won't charge you the hourly labor rate - $50.00 is all you'll need to pay." I said, "No thanks, Sparky. I belong to Camaro5.com and I'll figure it out."

I went home and searched the Forum for past threads. I found it immediately.

All you have to do is this:
1) Put the old key in the ignition and turn to the ON position as far as it will go without starting the car.
2) Remove the old key.
3) Insert the new key and turn to the ON position as far as it will go without starting the car.
4) Wait 3 - 4 seconds and the HUD will display "Third Key Recognized"

IT'S THAT SIMPLE!

I started the car with the new key. Locked/Unlocked the car. Opened the trunk. Piece of cake! Bob's your uncle.

Thanks C5 for saving me $50.00, plus gas, and an hour of my time!

What would make this experience even better is if you searched this before you got the key and programmed it there in front of the service tech. Then ask "You wanted to charge me $50 to do that?"

HA! You got that right! Yeah, it was a spur-of-the-moment thing, but if I had a do-over, that's how it would have played out.

Then they told me I can't use Mobil-1.

Buh-bye!!!
