How much "fiberglass"?

How much, if any, of the camaro body panels are fiberglass? On my '86 IROC, the front and rear pieces are fiberglass, and I've had problems with paint flaking off. (The car has been repainted, so it's not the original paint) Are all body panels on the 2010 version metal?

Thanks

The paint flaking from a repaint has nothing to do with the body material.

It can if the wrong paint is used. Some of the older GM plastics were pretty flexible and would crack and spiderweb, eventually peeling off. Ask any fiero owner.

They don't use much fiberglass anymore.

I believe that any non-metal body panel will either be a thermoset polyurethane or a SMC type of "plastic".

The paint is all the same on a BC/CC. You have to add flex agent to the clear coat for the flexible pieces. If it is single stage you add it to the paint.

GM hasn't used fiberglass in about 15 years. In the mid '90s GM went to a polyurethane plastic.

Your bumper covers are plastic, not fiberglass.

There are some paints out there that have the flex agent in them already (higher end Duponts and PPGs); like you said: there are some you have to add. I think the single stages are the lesser expensive, for the most part, and require one to add the flex.

I believe the SMC is sheet molded composite and was used in the doors, roof, and hatch on the 4th Gens (hoods on the SSs and WS6s). The front and rear covers, along with the fenders, were the poly' stuff. Those SMC panels could be repaired close to how one would repair fiberglass to my understanding. The poly' panels would sometimes require the use of epoxies and urethanes to bind them and hold them together.

Yeah - I think the doors and hatch (and hoods on the top models) were the type of fiberglass (SMC) you're thinking of. OH - the spoilers too.

I think it's great we have all metal panels (minus the bumper covers) now. I'm not excited they add weight, but I like that they give me a better feeling of quality, and not the feeling I'm driving a Saturn. It's too bad that that metal weighs more though.
