Question Turbo or Supercharger

I'm not getting one, at least not anytime soon. Just wanted to see opinions based on how the car is going to be driven.

This would be for a SS M6 that is not going to the track. Just really for recreational driving. The way I see it, if you already have 500+ NA horsepower, you really already have enough torque to get off the line. So I would think a turbo would be a better choice so the extra hp and torque aren't kicking in right away. Basically just adding power above 2-3k RPMS.

Or, go with a supercharger and have all that extra horsepower down low, but it will probably leave you spinning your tires when launching your car. I'm talking just normal street tires since this would be completely a street car.

In this case, which do you think would be the better choice? Turbo or Supercharger?

well if it is not going to track, or only going to track as a once in a great while ...i would probably lean sc...lot less involved , they look nasty and meanacing under your hood...and have instant power...no lag / which new turbo,s have very little ..shops to do a good turbo are hard to find, and if you travel and have issues...less shops to repair them...superchargers are more of a bolt on and less costly..imo..more support..you can get a sc installed and tuned for under 7k...i don,t think you will find a turbo installed and tuned for that

TURBO ALL THE WAY. I did the full install on mine and it really wasn't bad. I have no lift either. All jackstands and initiative. Had to install a new fuel pump which was extensive...but you'll need to do that Turbo or SC. But, you ask this side and they say SC, that side Turbo. I love the sound and feel of it, and it's like a stock car until you stomp it.

That is kind of what I would be looking for. The car runs off mostly motor until a decide to get on it.

But I don't know. Other than an easier install for a SC, what other benefits does a SC give you for just typical driving with the ocassional fun?

Because of the street tire issue I would shy away from a roots style blower because of the power and torque down low. Honestly for a dd car that has street tires and no intent on racing I would do just bolt ons and a h/c package. Turbo's are capable of insane power and torque throughout the powerband and a centrifugal blower makes it's power rpm based and gives you the luxury of making the least among of torque, so for the sake of the question I'd go centri.

I've had my maggie s/c on for a while with around 9psi and its my DD. It does have a lot of power down low, but its no problem driving it everyday, unless you burnout from stop light to stop light. Have you looked at procharger or vortech? They dont have as much tq off the line, but make their power in mid-high ranges.

Edelbrock E-Force is the one for a daily driver if you don't want to go crazy with the power and mods. Looks factory finished with the aluminum engine covers and makes no sounds. You have stock drivability and over 400+ FT-Lbs of torque at anywhere above 2000 RPM when you want to move faster. It drives just like stock only it feels like you have a bigger engine.

The centrifugals will make more power up in the top RPMs but the screws will make power in the street driving RPMs. No other blower will have more torque at those lower speeds. It is a "Street" blower.

turbo...more power on top, less stress below on the street scene...u can change psi on a fly, much less heat if u run the underbody styled ones, no cam change or headers necessary....just my .02

It's really a matter of preference. The aftermarket has come out with products for the 5th gen Camaro in such a big way - you really can't go wrong. There are so many well engineered kits. Positive Displacement, Centrifugal or Turbo. Many Nitrous systems out there too.

When I was picking up my Camaro yesterday, the speed shop had a new Camaro there with a turbo at 7psi but EVERYTHING else was stock. It was putting down 567rwhp and 600lb torque. And I mean stock. One side of the exhaust manifold was custom for the turbo to connect, but he still had factory cats, exhaust, etc.

As was mentioned two posts up, there is a world of options. My strong recommendation is to find a reputable builder, not just a name, and then talk to them about your driving style and desires in the performance arena... There are applications that are for show and go, and applications that are for go only, re.... sleepers...

First and foremost, talk to car folks that are not in the business... Gear heads, Camaro enthusiasts, corvette folks, and get their builder/shop recommendations... Then go talk to the shops and find one you like and more importantly trust...

If they are not open to dialogue, ie, they only want to do X, then go find someone else, their X may not fit you but it maybe all they know or what they make the most money on...

In my Opinion Supercharger, You have a more 1-1 relationship with your Gas Pedal to HP on an Instant basis.

Where with a turbo you move the gas pedal and Wait for the Power to come on.

Supercharged Cars Drive like factory Cars with no supercharger if you select the gas pedal position to do the job.

Basically I tell my customers when you add a supercharger the Gas Pedal gets a lot longer

Or it is like we took the block out from under the Pedal.

Ted.
