Here goes the UAW again....

UAW is once again working to bankrupt GM. Hopefully Ford is successful is helping create a second auto workers union as the UAW is out of control.

I'm really stunned that there are US line jobs left at all you get so little ROI on the American worker for non-skilled labor. The American worker demands not only higher pay but more benefits because they can't keep themselves healthy as well. I hate to say it game but we've priced ourselves out of decent paying bottom of the barrel jobs. Hopefully the auto industry will catch on before they start going bankrupt again. Made in America now stands for nothing but a joke and its mostly self inflicted.

The UAW president himself said in the article:
Quote:
"As long as unionized workers are being forced to compete with nonunion workers who in most cases receive lower pay and benefits -- many in temporary jobs -- there will continue to be a downward pressure on the wages and benefits of all auto workers," [King] said in a statement.
Sounds like they're not trying to bankrupt anybody. A couple dollars pay raise for the lower tier workers is not a terrible thing. And profit sharing is just that, profit sharing. If you make a profit, you get some of that profit. I'm entitled to that at my job. a $5000 sign on bonus is also not that much considering their hourly wage is half as much as it used to be (@ $14/hr you'd make roughly $29,000/yr) heck, I negotiated a $5000 sign on bonus out of college, so it really is peanuts to companies. These aren't outrageous requests the union is making here.

Some union policies are crazy in my opinion, but I personally see nothing wrong with this specific article.

I have to agree with you, the American worker is causing their own problems. When they lose their $17 an hour job, they think they are too good to work a different job for $10 an hour. Until they suck it up and start taking a lower paying job, nothing will ever turn around. Sometimes it does start at the bottom and work it's way up.

This is a hard issue to debate on here because you are going to have two entirely different outlooks based almost 100% on your geographical location. Everyone in the South, SE, SW no doubt will say how unions try to suck corps. dry - conversely everyone in MidWest, North East will say how the unions are looking out for the employees. Living in both the Midwest and the South, those two scenarios play out pretty true. The interesting thing to see is if people in union areas don't like the UAW or if someone in the South does support it...

Not everyone should have a family or a mortgage....especially if they are only qualified to make $10 dollars an hour or job that should be paying that. Why should the employer pick up the tab for someone? I hear that argument from retail employees all the time that cashiers, sales people and stockers about how they can raise their families on such low wages. My question to them is why are you still doing jobs that you were doing in your late teens and not trying to for something better, like an actual career?

Really? It,s a matter of cutting back and not sucking off the system. Not saying to stay at a low wage, just take the lower till things turn around.

Ok Anyone on this forum who owns a new Camaro earns much more than a bottom of the barrel $10/hr or even $15/hr job. There is no way anyone here could afford a camaro unless you are independently wealthy or earn at least $20/hr...that being said the union pushes for higher wages, so people at the bottom can ACTUALLY earn a meaningful living, not just scrape by. I understand some people will argue we won't be as competitive, but do you really think it's fair for someone who has worked in a company building the very same car you drive to earn peanuts?? IMO... if you (me included) can afford a toy like this, we should have a heart and let the workers collectively bargen. On the flip side, we now have competition from China and other countries so their needs to be a ballance... Oh and no I'm not a lefty or in a Union just someone who believes in fair wages.
