Afterburners

Actually this thread is about backfires out the exhaust, and that neat little flash of flame you get out your tail pipes. I'll try to not sound like a crazy person here.... But I think it's already too late.

So it started with this youtube video of a Ferrari F50 screwing around. It seemed to shoot flames when it would downshift and slow down. The video was shot from a chase car. These were natural flames, not any sort of crazy flame thrower kit.

So then I paid a visit to wikipedia, and read that in high performance cars, if you UPshift and then get off the gas, the car will run lean for a moment and cause an exhaust flash (not downshift). What is the real deal with this? What causes natural flames from not-malfunctoining cars?

With the right driving habits, can I make my Camaro do this? My guess is no, because with direct injection, I probably always have the right amount of fuel, no matter what I do. Still, if it can be done, I want to try

LOL, your best bet is to just get a flame thrower kit.

If you want flames out the exhaust pipe buy a RX7.

I've owned two RX-8's. No one ever told me they saw flames coming out of my car. But those cars were animals on the highway. No one behind me ever stayed in eyeshot for long.

Guess I should have clarified, turbo'd RX7. They run rich as hell to keep from blowing apex seals. Have several friends with them that threw fireballs out the tail pipe when speed shifting.

When you shift and the engine rpms drop, or when you close the throttle, the injectors lag behind ever so slightly. This creates an instant rich condition, which is usually ignited in the exhaust. On a ferrari, the pipes are extremely short, as with any mid engine car, which makes them easier to see.

So lets just say I'm screeming up an on-ramp with my car being sufficiently warmed up... if I shift from say 3rd to 6th and get off the gas, I can possibly make my car shoot fire? I actually have this happen all the time, screaming up an empty ramp, only to find myself ass deep in slow moving traffic.

If you don't run cats you easily make your own kit to shoot flame with a switch, some wire and a few plugs. Would be cool at night. Lol

I have seen this video myself as well and it is VERY cool. Unfortunetaly in the camaro I cannot see thise being possible especially with stock exhaust. If you were running a catless header out the side of the front fenders then MAYBE you'll shoot some flames out the side. But because the exhaust is so long and your probably running cats the flames will quickly dissappear long before they exit the rear of the car.
